Feherty will be joining the live coverage of the “Florida Swing” on the Golf Channel Live Broadcast Team. He will make his live debut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 4-7 which I think is appropriate.
Somehow I find it fitting that he should be covering what is arguably to most raucous event on the PGA Tour schedule. We will have Feherty on the course with Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller in the tower.
“After a few months off, my peacock feathers are finally starting to come in and I’m ready to join my new NBC colleagues to kick off a spectacular year ahead with The Open coming to NBC, golf’s return to the Olympics, and my personal favorite, the Ryder Cup, this fall on U.S. soil,” said David Feherty.
“Forget the training wheels, I feel like I’m a gerbil being tossed to the lions in the Colosseum at TPC Scottsdale. I’m counting on Johnny [Miller] and [Roger] Maltbie to stick up for me should I encounter any chance skirmishes with those lunatic fans throughout the week.”
Feherty has been described as “a cross between Oprah Winfrey and Johnny Carson” by The New York Times, and as “golf’s wisecracking, maverick interviewer” by Esquire.
There is no question that he is a fan favorite with many of them watching or recording his Golf Channel talk show. While most commentators tend to bore us to death with comments ranging from the obvious to the ridiculous we can always count on David for his wonderful one liners.
On Tiger Woods: “I just stood there watching him walk past and thinking, ‘I don’t know what that is, but I know there weren’t two of them on Noah’s Ark.’”
On an errant shot: “That ball is so far left Lassie couldn’t find it even if it was wrapped in bacon.”
On Jim Furyk’s swing: “It looks like a one-armed man trying to wrestle a snake in a phone booth.”
One thing is for sure and that is we can depend on him to entertain us and make watching golf on television fun. I am looking forward to the first tournament already so I can ad more quotes to my collection.
