Henrik Stenson Says Winning Tour Championship ‘Should be That Hard’

This week in Atlanta, five players control their own destiny and their shot at the $10 million top prize up for grabs as FedExCup Champion — but that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy.

Henrik Stenson, who enters the Tour Championship presented by Coca-Cola in the top-5 in FedExCup points for the second time in five years, knows his chances this week are more slim than they appear — at least, that’s what we took from his remarks on Tuesday.

Stenson, who won the Tour Championship and the $10 million FedExCup in 2013, was asked about his chances this week in Atlanta. His answer was amusing — and honest.

“So, I still have one more chance and it shouldn’t be too hard to wipe the floor with these guys this week, right?” Stenson asked in jest. “There is no one that is playing great and is sky high on confidence and no one with  a bunch of majors and no one who hits it 330 off the tee — so it shouldn’t be that hard.”

Let’s do a little breaking down of the comment. Obviously, he’s talking about Bubba Watson with the “330 off the tee” comment, right? Then again, that could be Rory McIlroy, too. “Sky high on confidence?” That’s Jason Day, right? Right. And the guy with a bunch of majors? That’s Jordan Spieth, yeah?

Ahh, yeah — I guess you’re right, Henrik.

Then again — it’s not like the Swede has played poorly lately. Sure, last week he was little more than average, but before that he notched back-to-back runner-up finishes at The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship? So it’s not like he’s slumping coming into East Lake?

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what happens in Atlanta. If I’m a betting man (and you know damn-well I am!) then I’m probably avoiding Stenson this week — as good as he’s been, you probably don’t want to take a guy who is kind of already writing himself off on Tuesday afternoon.

I suppose anything can happen — but I tend to agree with him on the sentiment.
