It’s official — Rory McIlroy will make his return to action at the PGA Championship next week at Whistling Straits.

It has long been rumored that McIlroy would return to defend his title, but on Friday afternoon, it became official.

The PGA of America broke the news on Twitter:

As you’ve may have noticed — not only is McIlroy back, but he’s paired with Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson for the first two rounds.

That sound you just heard was golf nerds everywhere fainting from excitement.

It certainly appears that all of the hard work the four-time major champion has been putting in with his rehab program, trying to get back on the links in time to defend his title has paid off.

If you’ve paid any attention to McIlroy’s Instagram page, you know he loves to work out — so he seemed right at home putting in the work to get his injured right ankle back in shape, regardless of how hard the workout.

On Wednesday, McIlroy posted a video of his workout, really testing his ankle:

Working hard every day to come back stronger #dontmindthegrind

McIlroy has already missed opportunities to defend his Open Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational victories from 2014 due to the July 4 ankle injury, but his swing looks like he may just be ready for Whistling Straits:

Feels good to hit the driver again!

The images may not be pretty, but the progress is undeniable:

An update is expected on McIlroy’s status for the PGA Championship before the end of the week.
