Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach and those who can do neither like to offer unsolicited advice.
At least, that was the case right of the second fairway at the Travelers Championship early on Sunday in Hartford, Connecticut.
That’s where Bubba Watson found himself early in his final round, stymied by a tree and looking for a way out.
That’s when a fan who had either had one too many oat sodas that afternoon or can’t hit a sand wedge very high offered Bubba some not-so-sage advice:
“Hit a punch 4-iron!”
In case you missed it, here’s a look at what Bubba did instead:
Punch 4-iron, huh? Maybe for you, son — but not for the guy who hit a boomerang wedge from the pine straw to about 10 feet to win the Masters, thank you very much.
Reports from the grounds were that Watson told the fan before the shot, “That’s why you’re on that side of the ropes and I’m on this side.”
After he pulled off the shot, Watson turned and looked for the fan so he could jaw him once more.
Ouch.

Then again, it all worked out OK for Watson, who obviously pulled off the very tough shot, sticking his approach over the tree close enough for a less-than-stressful birdie — his second in a row to start the round.

While many — including myself — will call this guy a moron, idiot, jerk, etc., let’s face it: we’re all a little bit jealous of this guy. He’s the guy we all wish we could be and now, he has a story we all wish we had.
I mean, how many of us can say we’ve been trash talked by a two-time major champion? This guy can.
The anonymous morons who yell “mashed potatoes” or “bababooey” incessantly are annoying for sure, but there is a place in my heart for those who come up with truly creative things to yell or who are willing to offer advice to a touring pro, those who down their beers and up the ante on the amusing.
For instance, the guys yelling cereal slogans on Sunday at the Travelers? Brilliant. Or the guy who yelled “Mary Samsonite” behind Charley Hoffman in 2013 when he had the mullet and looked shockingly similar “Dumb and Dumber” star Jeff Daniels? Classic.
This guy didn’t have to yell anything, he just had to get Bubba’s attention – and because of it, we’ve got another moment that is both classic Bubba Watson and classic drunk fan. Thank you, both for doing your part.
Ultimately, the encounter didn’t seem to phase Watson who went on to collect his eighth career win on the PGA Tour and his second at the Travelers Championship, besting Paul Casey in a sudden-death playoff.
