Sergio Garcia shoots a tournament record 9 under par 61 and is at eleven under halfway through the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. Garcia birdied eight of his last nine holes to take charge and is clear of the field by three strokes. Garcia’s putter is on FIRE with 11 “consecutive” one putts on his round on Friday. Must be the water in Spain as the ladies roared to victory last week in the inaugural International Crown and now Sergio “smokes” the course at Firestone.
Justin Rose is alone in second at eight under par after a round of three under 67 on Friday. Rose held the lead for most of the day until Garcia went on his birdie brigade late in the afternoon. Round one leader Marc Leishman is tied with Rory McIlroy and seven under par four strokes behind the leader. McIlroy with another dazzling round of six under par 64 and is right there in contention again this week. Rickie Fowler and Charl Schwartzel are tied for fifth at six under par some five back of Garcia.
Tiger Woods fell into a tie for 25th with Bubba Watson and Jimmy Walker at one under par ten shots back of the leader. Woods had a rough day with the driver and the putter “again” and is jeopardy of not making the end of the year playoffs. Fan favorite “Lefty” Phil Mickelson is at four over par tied for 53rd.
