New Ping Rapture 3-Wood Quick Look Preview: Your New Driver?

A lot of people struggle with their driver off the tee and try to find an alternative to solve this problem.  Many golfers grab their 3-wood and head to the tee but lose a lot of distance.  So the question of why hasn’t anyone come up with a solution has been answered.  Ping Golf announced the 12-degree Rapture 3-Wood for golfers looking for a versatile driver alternative.

So let’s talk about the technology behind the PING Rapture 3-wood.  It is a multi-material golf club that has a Ti 8-1-1 titanium body, high-strength beta-titanium face and tungsten sole plate.  Ping put this club together with all these materials in hopes to create a club with increased ball speed and lower spin for more distance and accuracy.  It also is adjustable to create even more options off the tee.

From Ping:

“The weighting properties of titanium and tungsten provide our engineers a lot of opportunities to improve performance,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “The high-strength beta-titanium material allowed us to really focus on creating a hotter face that yields ball speeds and distance unlike any we’ve seen in fairway woods. The tungsten positions the weight extremely low so we can optimize the CG position. It has a taller face and deeper head profile, so golfers will have complete confidence with the Rapture. We think golfers will really appreciate this unique combination of technology to improve their performance. It’s extremely long off the tee. We’re excited to get it in golfers’ hands.”

Let’s talk a little bit more technology behind the Ping Rapture 3-wood since after all that is what makes this club unique in my opinion. The face is made of what they are calling high strength beta titanium, which is supposed to be 30% stronger than standard titanium.  They made the face a bit taller as well to create a larger hitting surface for more forgiveness.  Almost 25% of head mass is isolated in the tungsten sole plate, which positions the CG much lower in the Ti 8-1-1 head, further improving energy transfer for higher ball speed and less spin.

Ping again has created a beautiful looking golf club.  I love the matte-black finish on this golf club.  Although I do like some pizazz and color to a golf club every now and again, I have always been a sucker for the matted black finish.

The Ping Rapture 3-wood comes standard with 113 degrees of loft but can be adjusted plus or minus 1/2 a degree.  Ping also threw in their TFC 949 graphite shaft, which comes in a standard length of 43 1/2 inches, to help promote an increase in momentum for fast ball speeds and ultimately more distance.
