With 68 players still left to finish their rounds, there are currently 32 players within 5 shots of the lead which sits at -1 and is shared by Phil Mickelson and Billy Horschel who has the low round of the day thus far with a 67. He also becomes the first player since 1992 to hit all 18 greens in regulation, both him and Phil birdied the final hole to get them into red figures.
Within the 32 players that are only 5 shots back sit Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els all at +3 and will have a chance to be right in the mix as the 3rd round starts tomorrow. We won’t be able to see who’s playing with who until tomorrow morning but there will certainly be some great pairings. The USGA is considering going with threesomes tomorrow as well to ensure that the final round has everyone starting on #1 as usual so keep an eye out for that as well.
Not to be overlooked are two amateurs that are right in the thick of it and representing the Pac 12 very well. Cheng Tsung Pan from the University of Washington is currently -2 thru nines holes and E for the tournament. Then Michael Kim who is one of three
Cal Bears in the field is also -2 thru eleven holes and +1 for the tournament. Both have a lot of golf left to finish their second rounds but it makes you wonder. Could this be the year of the amateur?
