So after all the controversy from yesterday with Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods, all eyes were on the both of them to make The Players Championship an unforgettable one. For reasons no one could have predicted, it ended up being of the most memorable Players Championships of all time.
With newbie David Lingmerth keeping pace the entire day with Sergio and Tiger, it wasn’t until the 17th and 18th hole that a leader stepped out and above the rest.
Tiger Woods birdied the 16th to go up by one stroke over Garcia at -13. Then Sergio got his birdie on 16 and they were all tied up. Tiger finished #17 with a par and walking to 18 when Garcia and Lingmerth stepped up to the water surrounded 17th at TPC Sawgrass. Sergio stepped up and his first shot landed in the water. Sergio then set up for his second try at the hole and it landed in the water again after hitting the side of the hill. Now sitting on 4 and looking at his 5th stroke, he played it safe and went for the middle of the green. Garcia ended the hole with quadruple bogey and knocking himself out of contention.
Lingmerth then stepped up and stuck one close and got a birdie and was then sitting one stroke behind Tiger Woods. Woods got a par on 18 and left the door open for Lingmerth. Lingmerth’s second hit didn’t quite get the slope on the green. Woods ended up pulling off the win for his 78th career win.
Not only was The Players Championship a memorable one because Tiger Woods is now one closer to Sam Snead, but for the amazing debacle of Sergio Garcia. After getting his quadruple bogey on 17, Garcia then went on to double bogey the 18th after hitting the water there as well.
So after yesterday’s excitement of the battle between Sergio and Tiger, it ended with Garcia having one of the worst meltdowns in PGA Tour history.
