After three straight days of starts and stops, the first round of the shortened Hyundai Tournament of Champions is in the books. Well, blow me away!!
The tournament, held on the Plantation Course at Kapalua on the island of Maui was scheduled to start this past Friday and conclude today (Monday). Mother Nature apparently never got the schedule. Three straight days of high winds along with several days of rain combined to sabotage the opening event of the PGA TOUR season.
Finally play began earlier today (7:10 a.m. Hawaii time) and a 36 hole (hopefully) day was planned for today with 18 holes scheduled n Tuesday to complete the pared down 54 hole event.
Dustin Johnson, Nick Watney and Mark Wilson were tied at the end of the first 18 hoes at 4-under 69. Five players, Rickie Fowler, Brandt Snedeker, Ben Curtis, Bubba Watson and Carl Pettersson were one stroke back at 3-under 70. Steve Stricker, the winner of the 2012 Hyundai TOC, was two strokes back at 2-under 71 along with five other players.
As of this writing, play has started for the second round. While windy conditions are still prevalent, it appears that players will be able to conclude the 36 holes scheduled for today.
A second round recap will be posted later this evening.
