In September of 2003 Ping launched its acclaimed Ping G2 Irons series. Engineered and developed by Ping's highly regarded design teams, the Ping G2 HL Iron Set was among this series. The Ping G2 HL Iron Set was designed specifically to help players achieve a higher launch - hence the "HL" in the name - and the club has done just that for thousands of players ever since. What's more, the G2 HL was intended to retire the mid and long irons that were more difficult to strike. As is in keeping with practically all of Ping's product lines, the G2 HL Iron Set caused a stir in the golf world, and worked well with the other G2, G2L and G2 EZ sets.

Achieving that high launch was created by using a widened sole in order to really get the ball moving. Extreme perimeter weighting worked with the sole by taking weight away from the head face and moving it to the edges. The overall affect moved the head's center of gravity (CG) away from the face. The result? The Ping G2 HL Iron Sets sent the ball longer and higher and created a much softer landing.

Another aspect of the Ping G2 HL Iron Sets' design factor was a big increase in the club's moment of inertia, or MOI. This too was achieved by taking the weight away from the club face to the edges. Forgiveness was also improved by these heavier perimeters, especially on off-center hits, and no matter what level you're playing at, that's going to be a very welcome thing indeed.

Adding to this greater control was the wider sole, which strengthened and stabilized the face. That lead to a more forgiving bounce and less dragging into the grass and dirt.
