Golf Tip: How to Choose the Right Golf Ball for You
This ball or that ball…that is the question
Seriously, when you think about the average golfer (us) and we take into account all the money we throw at our games from getting the ‘best putter’, ‘state of the art driver’, ‘newest technologically advanced irons’, a ‘killer wedge’, ‘Golf GPS the can dress you in the morning’, we somehow find ourselves overlooking the most obvious piece of equipment—the Golf Ball.
How many of us are guilty of making sure we look good on the course, have top equipment, but run into the golf shop for a dozen ball and when asked, “Which one’s do you like?”, we respond, “Doesn’t matter…cheapest or whatever you have on sale. They are all the same!”
Well, I am here to tell you that when you get right down to it, you may be a good player with great equipment but find yourself scoring badly and it could be due to the choice of your golf ball. Yes, the golf ball is extremely important. What is it that actually gets counted on every hole?—The number of times you hit the GOLF BALL.
Selecting the Proper Golf Ball
First and foremost, you must take a serious look at your game. Are you really Tiger Woods or Cristie Kerr, or are you more of a beginner. Be honest with yourself and determine your level of game. Yes, there are hundreds of golf balls to choose from, but before you allow your head to spin off its axis, let me try to keep it fairly simple.
For a beginner, it is important to really get a ball that is very solid and durable since you may not quite be hitting it pure yet. A solid durable two-piece ball will travel farther adding distance to your shots and giving you a boost in confidence.
If you are a more advanced player and really have a good sense of how to spin a ball and get it to stop on a green, you may be in need of a ball that allows you for better control off the tee and around the greens. For the lower handicap player, a softer covered Balata ball is a good choice. You will give up distance off the tee with a Balata ball and it can cut up easier, but it will allow you for more spin and control around the greens.
There is another element of the golf swing to consider when choosing a golf ball and that is your swing speed. These days, manufacturers are developing golf ball technology that is centered on the golfer’s swing speed. Now you can have a pro check your swing speed on equipment that registers your mph through the ball and it can help you narrow down your choices.
Finally, manufacturers have researched and developed ball fitting tools on their website that is easy to use and help you find the right ball for you by answering simple questions and once you submit, you are given the best ball fit for your game and ability.
Golf is a game of ever changing technology and an evolution of equipment over centuries that will remain in constant change. It will always be up to us to determine the correct ball for our given abilities, but it has become easier to uncover and discover the best ball for you game.
My advice is simple, if you plan to spend lots of money looking good going to the course, just spend a little more on looking good on the course with a golf ball that fits your swing and ability.
