Powerbilt DFX N7 Review
« on: March 31, 2014, 07:54:39 PM »

Powerbilt has sent me one of their new DFX Tour drivers to put through the ringer.

Here's a link to their website...
http://store.powerbilt.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=AFO%2DDFX%2DTOUR%2DBLACK%2DDRIVER

This is the same driver that rated very highly on MyGolfSpy's driver shootout earlier this year. Here are a few of the specs:

• Forged Titanium Body
• Titanium Cup Face Technology
• Available in High MOI and Tour Series
• Aerodynamic Head Shape
• Deep Face Profile
• Nitrogen Powered Technology
• Nitrogen Pressurized Club Heads

Now to the good stuff....

Looks:

The DFX has a very clean, compact look at address. The head is a matte black and produces very little glare. The head looks much more compact compared to my SLDR and monster sized Cobra Bio Cell. I'm pretty impressed with the sleek look and I felt confident looking down at address.

Feel:

This can be a tricky description to conquer. Everyone's sense of feel is different, but here goes nothing. I've hit just about every driver out there this year and have come up with a scale of drivers that feel soft, hard, and somewhere in the middle. I consider the Ping G25, SLDR, and Bio Cell to have a softer feel at impact while the R11s, X2Hot, and JetSpeed are much harsher. At this point in time, 1 range session, I'm leaning toward more of the higher end of the middle spectrum for the DFX. It's not super hard, but it isn't mushy either. The shaft has a lot to do with the feel as well, but we don't need to go there.

Sound:

Here's another club characteristic that can be tricky to describe. I'm going to describe the sound as strong with a hint of tin.

Shaft:

Powerbilt has a variety of shafts available to suit every type of swing out there. For this testing, I was sent the Graphite Design G70x. I don't know a lot about this particular shaft, but from what I saw on the range tonight I'm going to classify it as a mid launch, mid spin shaft.

Pictures:

Testing Process:

I will test this on the driving range and on the course. Any launch numbers provided will be with range balls unless otherwise noted. The launch monitor used during this testing will be a Flightscope X2. I will test this against several drivers of equal loft, but different shafts. I also plan to have a few buddies get on the monitor with their gamers and the DFX to compare.

Looks nice Staples. It got some high praise in the MGS driver shootout.

Good start Staples.

When we talk about Sleeper Clubs the Powerbilt drivers seem to be exactly that. The last Air Force One was a monster so I'm curious if this continues that trend.

I also love that Powerbilt wants to push reviews out there. They know their going to get some slagging because they aren't considered a "major" OEM at the time but are confident that their product will over come that. I like that. it's ballsy and confident. Exactly what I want out of a driver as well.

Do you have a line to PB Staples? I'm curious if they can bend these heads at all to suit different swingers since they aren't adjustable or if the nitrogen process makes that a no go.

Range Session #1:

Date: March 30th
Location: Hobbs Hole GC Driving Range
Weather: Low 60's with a 5-10mph cross wind

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I started hitting the DFX. I've never hit a Powerbilt driver before, so I was excited. Today I had my Cobra Bio Cell to compare against the DFX.

DFX 10.5* w/ GD G70x

Cobra BioCell w/ Aldila Tour Green 65x:

Comparison:

Thoughts:

I honestly was shocked at how well the DFX performed on the range. Ball speed was up and I was hitting the center of the face. I did catch a few higher on the face and ball speed suffered, but I didn't have any heel or two misses. This is the exact opposite of my SLDR. I hit more toe shots than I hit the sweet spot.

The club launched a little lower than what I was expecting, but performance was still there. If I could bring the launch up a bit, this driver will be an absolute bomber. I don't recall ever seeing ball speeds of 165+ with a range rock. My swing path was closer to neutral with this club as well. It's a little shorter than my BioCell in length and may just be the magic swing weight for me. The BioCell was a little more over the top and strike pattern on the face was a lot less consistent. I didn't expect the DFX to out perform my brand new BioCell, but damn was I wrong. I'm going to get it back on the range Wednesday to compare to the SLDR.

On Course:
Weather: Low 60's
Course is extremely wet after 2.25" of rain over the weekend.

I snuck out on the course tonight after my range session to see if my success carried over. I trunked the BioCell and brought the DFX.

Hole #1: 485 yard par 5
Hit a mid trajectory baby draw just inside the 200 yard marker. Dead center of fairway.

Hole #3: 405 yard par 4
Hit a straight shot just off the right side of the fairway. Left with 105 yards to a center pin.

Hole #5: 310 yard par 4
Wanted to grip and rip this one. Uncle Si would have shot the duck hook had he seen it. Shot ended up way left leaving me roughly 100 yards to the pin.

Hole #6: 370 yard par 4
This is a hole I would normally hit a hybrid or 3 wood on due to a hazard 250-275 yards out from the tee box. I choked up and put a 3/4 punch swing on the DFX. It was a low, baby fading bullet that stopped rolling just short of the hazard. 1 yard short of the hazard.

Hole #8: 440 yard par 4
This is my nemesis hole with hazard up the entire left side. I typically aim up the right side and try to draw it off the fairway bunker. Try is the magic word. Well, today I hit a perfect shot that drew off the bunker and ended up 314 yards from the tee box in the fairway.

Hole #9: 500 yard par 5
Water up the left, but plenty of bailout right. I wanted to try and rip one again, but forgot to close the club face. Hit a high block to the right leaving me a 3w into the green.

I am extremely impressed with the DFX right now. I'm looking forward to getting some more testing in Wednesday and comparing to the SLDR. This could easily be the sleeper of the year. Wow, I'm impressed.
