William McGirt and Mackenzie Hughes Tied for Lead at Players Championship

William McGirt and Mackenzie Hughes both turned in 5-under 67 performances in Round 1 of the Players Championship. McGirt took a bit more of a dramatic path to the top of the leaderboard while Hughes was steady and consistent.

McGirt’s round didn’t hit a bump until the back nine when he bogeyed the 10th. But he bounced back right away with an eagle from 56 feet away on the par-5 11th. McGirt followed that up with another eagle on the 16th after a beautiful second shot got him to within 10 feet of the cup.

Hughes had a bogey-free day and five birdies. His short game was strong, which helped him keep a clean scorecard. Hughes is a rookie playing in his first Players Championship.

Defending champion Jason Day is only three shots out of the lead after a 2-under 70 day. Having started on the back nine, Day could be tied for the lead if he hadn’t bogeyed three of his last four holes. His five birdies kept him within striking distance though.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, playing in his second tournament since his Masters injury, also eagled on No. 16. Three bogeys and two birdies landed him a 1-under 71.

J.B. Holmes, Alex Noren, Chez Reavie, and Jon Rahm are all right behind McGirt and Hughes at 4-under. Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and Adam Scott are right there in the mix as well.

The shot of the day undoubtedly goes to Sergio Garcia. Just watch what the 2017 Masters winner did below and get those goosebumps ready.

Round 2 tees off at 7:10 a.m. Eastern on Friday.
