Dustin Johnson Tabbed as Favorite to Win 2017 U.S. Open

Dustin Johnson

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson was knocked out of The Masters by a freak accident when he slipped on a staircase and fell on his lower back. However, Johnson plans to resume his season in May, and as of April 10, 2017, the Westgate Superbook in Las Vegas has him as the projected U.S. Open winner in June.

Johnson is an 8/1 favorite with Rory McIlroy right behind at 9/1. Here are some more odds from Westgate Superbook:

  • Dustin Johnson — 8/1
  • Rory McIlroy — 9/1
  • Jordan Spieth — 10/1
  • Jason Day — 12/1
  • Hideki Matsuyama — 15/1
  • Justin Rose — 15/1
  • Jon Rahm — 20/1
  • Sergio Garcia — 25/1
  • Rickie Fowler — 25/1
  • Adam Scott — 25/1
  • Henrik Stenson — 25/1
  • Phil Mickelson — 30/1
  • Justin Thomas — 30/1
  • Brooks Koepka — 40/1
  • Thomas Pieters — 40/1
  • Matt Kuchar — 40/1
  • Paul Casey — 50/1
  • Patrick Reed — 50/1
  • Louis Oosthuizen — 50/1
  • Branden Grace — 50/1

Nobody could have predicted what happened to Johnson the night before he was supposed to tee off at Augusta, but it does add a bit of mystery as to whether he can stay hot in 2017.

By the time the U.S. Open rolls around, the expectations for Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth in particular should be pretty high. As past U.S. Open winners, their seasons have left a lot to be desired. This is not to say McIlroy and Spieth have been terrible, but high expectations come with the territory when you’re ranked as Top 5 golfers in the world and everyone knows you can win.

It will also be interesting to see how Justin Rose bounces back in the year’s second major. He’s no stranger to winning the U.S. Open either of course, but he’ll be playing at Erin Hills this time.

The only thing better than watching Sergio Garcia win his first major might be seeing him win another back-to-back. For some players in any sport, it’s as if winning a title opens the floodgates and their level of confidence just skyrockets.

For now though, everyone is looking up at Dustin Johnson as the odds-on favorite.
