They may be newcomers on the PGA Tour, but Wesley Bryan and Cody Gribble have the rest of the field looking up at them on the Honda Classic leaderboard. Both tour rookies shot a 6-under 64 in Round 1 on Thursday at PGA National.
Bryan and Gribble will have to stay sharp though because even the 18 players tied for 24th after Round 1 are only four shots behind. This group includes big-time gamers like Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott with a ton of golf left to be played. Martin Kaymer and Anirban Lahiri will head into Round 2 tied at 5-under, just a stroke behind the 26-year old leaders.
The playing conditions were rather ideal on Thursday, which players such as Rickie Fowler noticed saying, “If the weather stays good and it’s able to dry out, I don’t see the golf course getting any easier.”
Bryan is attempting to keep his strong momentum from the Genesis Open (finished tied for fourth) going at the Honda Classic. Gribble meanwhile won the Sanderson Farms Championship in the fall, but is working to get back to form after missing three consecutive cuts in just the last month. Positioning himself for birdie putts on each hole like he did on Thursday should certainly help his cause.
