Blair O’Neal Gives ‘Sexy’ Golf Tip on the Flop Shot

We’re back this week with Golf Digest’s Sexiest Golf Shots. This week we get a lesson from Blair O’Neal on how to hit a flop shot. Most of the strokes that amateur players lose are on or around the green, so few things could be more useful than her advice on the popular, useful, yet tricky flop shot. Let’s break it down:

1. Open the clubface – This is self-explanatory, but it gives you a higher loft, launching the ball as straight into the air as possible. It’s important to open the face and then grip the club, as gripping first has the potential to make you inadvertently close up the face again.
2. Lower your hands – Lowering your hands sets your club shaft at a lower angle to the ground. This gives you a shallower swing path and ensures that the ball pops into the air.
3. Commit! – Commit, accelerate, they’re all the same. Be confident and commit to your shot. If you don’t commit and you decelerate, that’s when you start to get your chunked flops or, sometimes even worse, bladed shots to the other side of the green.
