Although the Players Championship is not considered a major championship, it does offer a $10 million purse with $1.8 million going to the winner. The field for the Players is always one of the strongest for any tournament all year long, and it is played on one of the toughest golf courses. The Players has often been considered the unofficial “fifth major” due to its prestige. It does have the same look and feel of a major championship.
The Stadium Course has one of the most challenging holes on the PGA Tour. The well-known par-3, 17th hole, that features an island green that will make or break any of the PGA Tour pro’s round. The field includes 46 of the top 50 players in the world. With a new playoff format in place for this week’s tournament that includes a three hole playoff, that includes holes 16, 17 and 18 of The Players Stadium Course are perhaps the most dramatic closing holes in professional golf.
If leaders are still tied after those terrifying holes, they go to 17 for a sudden death playoff. Defending champion Tiger Woods will not be on hand to defend his title this week at TPC Sawgrass. He is home recovering from back surgery and will not return to the tour until sometime this summer. Players to watch this week include; Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, Rory McIlroy, and always a fan favorite, Phil Mickelson.
