Once again, here’s Doug Maccaferri:
If St. Paddy’s Day weekend kept you a little busy celebrating, here’s a look at last week’s action to get you up to speed.
It only took John Senden 8 years to get to victory number two, as he clinched the Valspar Championship with some fantastic golf coming through Innisbrook’s famed closing stretch. With day four leader Robert Garrigus having dropped off the face of the earth (final round 75), it seemed like it was anybody’s tournament to take.
In front of a charging Kevin Na, and without anybody pulling away from the pack, Senden chipped in for birdie on the 16th, birdied the 17th, and closed with a par. Na came to the 18th needing a birdie to tie, but his approach left him too far away and his putt never really threatened. (Na Na Na Na, goodbye! I couldn’t resist.
I had been thinking about working that one in since Thursday.) Sitting at 123rd in the world, and needing a victory to get into the Masters, Senden did just that. The 42-year-old will be traveling to Augusta National for a third year in a row.

If you aren’t following @MiniTourProblems, then you’re missing out. With tweets from players battling their way through mini-tours across the country, it’s a great insight into the less-than-glamorous life of those who aren’t on the Tour but still love the game of golf. With opponents that aren’t always up to snuff on “whether it’s better to hit into a yellow or a red hazard” and hotel fiascos that lead to sleeping in Wal-Mart parking lots, it’s great to see the humorous side of the game of golf. So go, follow, and be entertained.
The ever-popular Titleist Vokey wedges newest iteration, the SM5, just hit stores this weekend. With seemingly every tour player gaming Vokeys, they’re a sure bet to fly off the shelves. For those of us without a mountain of disposable income to throw at the latest technology, this has other implications, as the SM4’s should see a fairly significant price dip. If anybody is planning on upgrading, I’m sure I could take care of those old SM4’s for you. You know, for science.
The “I Probably Should Have Stayed Home Today”
Award of the Week
Is it any surprise that this week’s recipient is none other than John Daly? For those of you not paying attention, or others who simply lost count, he carded a 12 on the 16th hole on Friday while on his way to shooting a majestic 90. Putting 3 balls in the water on the hole helped contribute to his (ready for this?) octuple-bogey. He was a good sport about it, however, calling it “a good 12,” and on a positive note, it went down as a one-putt (after 3-chipping).
This week the PGA heads to the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club in Orlando Florida. With a lot of big names in the field, it should look to garner a fair amount of attention as well as provide some great golf. The LPGA starts up again after a brief break, with the JTBC Founder’s Cup kicking off on the 20th at Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix.
