The PGA TOUR moves to La Jolla, California this week for the Farmers Insurance Open at the Torrey Pines South Course. Each entrant will also play one round on the North Course in one of the first two rounds. The South Course will then be utilized after the cut on Friday.
Let’s get a preview of the fourth tournament of the year on the PGA TOUR.
The Course: Torrey Pines as been a regular stop on the PGA TOUR since 1968 and played host to the 2008 U.S. Open. The South Course, at 7,698 yards, plays to a par 72 and is situated along the seaside cliffs of the Pacific Ocean. William Bell first laid out the course in 1957 and it was later upgraded by Rees Jones in 2001. The stop in previous years has also been called the Buick Invitational and the The San Diego Open. In 2010, Farmers agreed to a four-year agreement to sponsor this stop on the TOUR; that agreement runs through 2014.
The Field: The Farmers has drawn an impressive field including the 2013 U.S. debut of Tiger Woods who will be looking for his eighth professional victory at Torrey Pines. Brandt Snedeker will be on hand to defend his title from 2012 which he won in a playoff over Kyle Stanley after overcoming a seven-shot deficit on the final day. Other notables signing on are Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan, Tommy Gainey, Charles Howell III and John Daly.
The Purse: The Farmers Insurance Open has a purse of of $6,100,000 with $1,080,000 first place prize money.
Fedex Cup Points: 500 points to the winner.
The Schedule: Thursday-Sunday. (Jan. 24-27)
Television: Thursday-Friday 3-7 p.m. EST on Golf Channel.
Saturday-Sunday 1-2:30 p.m. Golf Channel and 3-6 p.m. on CBS.
